    Video Compress

    Local Plugin
    v1.2.6
    Requirements in plugin archive

Automatic video compression for Moodle™ assignment uploads. Reduces file sizes by 10x or more while maintaining video and audio quality using FFmpeg. See the plugin archive for release-specific requirements and feature availability.

⭐ Why this plugin is unlike anything else available

Automatic server-side compression — no external service, no per-file decisions

▸ External compression services introduce cost and privacy risk. Video Compress keeps everything on your own server: uploads are received normally, then queued for server-side FFmpeg compression via a scheduled task. Nothing is sent to a third-party compression service.

▸ Reduces typical lecture recordings by 60–90% without visible quality loss at standard screen sizes. A 500 MB screen recording commonly becomes 50 MB.

▸ Zero configuration: any video over 1MB is automatically compressed to 720p with optimised settings. The tool works site-wide without teachers making per-file decisions.

    Save Storage Space Automatically

Video Compress automatically detects video uploads in assignments and compresses them in the background. Typical compression ratios of 10x or more, saving gigabytes of storage while maintaining video and audio quality suitable for educational content.

    Auto-Detect Videos

Recognizes MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM & more

    Installation

    1. Download the plugin ZIP file
    2. Go to Site Administration → Plugins → Install plugins
    3. Upload the ZIP file and follow instructions
    4. Ensure FFmpeg is installed on the server (the settings page confirms detection, or set a custom FFmpeg path)

    Requirements

    • Moodle™ requirements as specified in the plugin archive
    • FFmpeg installed on the server
    • Standard PHP extensions (CURL, JSON)
    • Write access to Moodle™ temp directory

    How it Works

    Background Processing
When a video is uploaded, it's added to a background queue. The user doesn't have to wait for compression to finish before navigating away.
    Server-Side FFmpeg
Compression is handled by FFmpeg on your own Moodle™ server via a scheduled task. Nothing is sent to an external compression service, and the queue runs in the background so users aren't kept waiting.
