What this plugin exports
This is a staff evidence collector, not a student self-service download area or a Moodle course backup. It reads existing assessment records and builds PDF reports and ZIP evidence packs. It does not create assessments or mark submissions.
- Quizzes → PDF
- A finished-attempt evidence report with question evidence and assessment details. The exporter prefers non-preview attempts, then the most recent finish time and attempt number; it is not an archive of every quiz attempt.
- Assignments → ZIP or PDF
- File submissions are packaged with a compliance cover-sheet PDF. The cover sheet incorporates submission and marking information, feedback comments and online text where available. Online-text-only submissions with no uploaded files export directly as a PDF.
- Knowledge checks → PDF
- The dedicated knowledgecheck exporter builds question evidence and scores for the completed attempts it retrieves. This option requires the Knowledge Check activity and compatible attempt records; it is not support for every third-party knowledge-check module.
Installation & permissions
- Obtain the verified release through the access controls above. Review its archive-bound Requirements before installation.
- Upload the ZIP through Site administration → Plugins → Install plugins, or place the plugin directory at
local/student_exportin the Moodle installation. - Complete Moodle’s upgrade checks. Confirm PHP ZipArchive is available for assignment and course ZIP exports.
- Open Site administration → Reports → Student Evidence Export, or
/local/student_export/index.php.
The capability local/student_export:view is defined at system context and allowed for the manager archetype. Having a teacher role in one course alone is not enough. Grant it deliberately: it exposes personal assessment records across the export workspace.
There are no exporter configuration fields on a separate settings form; the admin registration links directly to the report.
Select a learner, then collect evidence
- Find the learner. Search by full name, email or Moodle username. The selector excludes deleted, suspended, unconfirmed and guest accounts and supports pagination.
- Choose the course. When the learner has records in
block_trainingplan_userseq, that sequence supplies the course list. Otherwise, the plugin uses enrolments on enabled enrolment methods without filtering the user enrolment’s suspension status. - Choose an evidence category. Browse quizzes, assignments or knowledge checks. The activity list is based on the records each category considers eligible, not a guarantee that the entire course is complete.
- View or download an activity. PDF exports can be served inline through View; ZIP exports remain archives, so browser preview is not guaranteed.
- Download All Evidence. Generate one course ZIP for the selected learner. Review its contents before retaining it as an evidence record.
Course ZIP contents & selection rules
The bulk endpoint includes visible, non-deleting quizzes with finished attempts, assignments with a latest submitted submission, and knowledge checks with attempt status 1 when that module is installed. Individual evidence files are placed in quizzes/, assignments/ and knowledgechecks/; assignment exports may themselves be ZIP files.
The interactive knowledge-check list additionally checks activity completion. Consequently, the on-screen list and bulk ZIP do not use identical eligibility rules. Quiz completion is based on a finished attempt, not necessarily a passing grade; an assignment need not already be graded to have a submitted record.
Optional final marking sheet: the bulk export can include the most recently modified approved sheet from local_finalmarkingsheet. The plugin, its table, PDF exporter and local/finalmarkingsheet:export course capability must be present. Without them, the normal evidence export still proceeds.
If no evidence files or eligible final marking sheet are added, the ZIP contains an export-notice.txt rather than an empty archive. It is an absence notice, not assessment evidence.
Privacy & handling exported records
The plugin declares a Moodle Privacy API null provider: it does not maintain its own personal-data store. It nevertheless reads personal data from Moodle and writes evidence files into request-scoped temporary directories for delivery.
Exports require login, the system capability and a valid session key. Downloaded files leave Moodle’s access controls; retain them in an approved location and apply your organisation’s access and retention policies. A generated evidence pack does not itself certify regulatory compliance.
Troubleshooting
- The learner is missing
- Check whether the Moodle account is suspended, unconfirmed or deleted. Those accounts are excluded from the selector. Searching is not limited to a student-role filter.
- A course or activity is missing
- Check the training-plan sequence first, then enrolment-method status. Confirm module visibility and the relevant finished/submitted attempt records. For knowledge checks, also check activity completion and the installed module’s attempt schema.
- The ZIP fails or the PDF cannot be opened
- Check PHP ZipArchive, temporary-directory permissions and Moodle’s PDF library errors. Review server logs using an authorised administrator account; do not share learner evidence in public support requests.
- The final marking sheet is absent
- Check that an approved sheet exists for this learner and course, that the optional plugin supplies its PDF save_file exporter, and that your account can export the sheet in course context.
