    What is Payment Unlock Assignment?

Payment Unlock Assignment is a Stripe-powered late submission monetisation plugin for Moodle™. Once an assignment passes its due date and locks, students who still need to submit can pay a configurable fee to reopen the assignment for a set number of days. All transactions are processed securely through Stripe, with full audit logging and admin override controls.

    The Problem

    • Students miss assignment deadlines and want extensions
    • Trainers spend time manually processing extension requests
    • No consistent, fair policy for late submissions
    • RTOs lose revenue when compassionate late submissions are free
    • No audit trail for who paid, when, and for which attempt

    The Solution

    • Stripe checkout in one click — no manual invoicing
    • Configurable fees per attempt (Attempt 1, Attempt 2, Attempt 3+)
    • Timed unlock window (default 7 days) after payment
    • Admin override — reopen, extend, lock, or approve without payment
    • Full audit log, payment history, and revenue dashboard
    How It Works
    1
    Assignment reaches its due date

The assignment locks automatically. The student can no longer submit for free.

    2
    Student visits the payment page

A "Reopen Assignment" link appears. Student is taken to /local/paymentunlockassign/student.php where they see their status, fee schedule, and payment history.

    3
    Student pays via Stripe

Clicking "Pay Now" creates a Stripe Checkout session. Student completes payment on Stripe's hosted page.

    4
    Webhook confirms payment

Stripe sends a checkout.session.completed webhook to Moodle™. The assignment is reopened for the configured number of days. Moodle™'s native override system is updated so Moodle™ also shows the new due date.

    5
Student submits and assignment locks again

Once the student submits, status changes to "Submitted". If the unlock window expires without submission, the assignment returns to "Locked" state.
