    Version 1.0.5

⭐ Why this plugin is unlike anything else available

Automatic media optimisation after upload — no teacher action required

▸ Other Moodle plugins restrict upload size limits before a file is added. Media Optimiser acts after upload: when a teacher adds an oversized image or video, the plugin re-encodes it to web-optimal dimensions and compression settings automatically. The course page serves the optimised file; the original is not kept.

▸ Teachers do not need to know about image compression, video bitrates, or web formats. They upload what they have; the plugin delivers what the learner needs.

▸ Configurable quality profiles per media type. Site administrators set the target size and quality once; every teacher upload benefits without any per-file decision.

    What it does

Media Optimiser scans every file stored in your Moodle site's file system — course resources, user uploads, activity submissions, and more — and surfaces the ones that are costing you the most in storage. It reads Moodle's existing {files} data and keeps its own plugin table for cached analysis results; no core Moodle tables are modified.

Each file is scored from 0 to 100 based on its size, the number of duplicate copies, and how inefficient its format is for web delivery. A BMP image scores near 100; a well-compressed WebP scores near 0. The dashboard shows your highest-impact files at the top with specific, actionable recommendations — convert this image to WebP, transcode that video to H.264, delete this unused backup, host that lecture recording on YouTube instead.

    Features

    7 Built-in Reports

Largest files, duplicate content, unused files, oversized images, unoptimised video, file-type breakdown, and per-course usage — all on one dashboard.

    Impact Scoring

Every file receives a 0–100 impact score based on size, duplication count, and format inefficiency — so you know exactly where to act first.

    Course File Browser

Browse files course-by-course with one-click navigation to the source content, making it easy to find and replace specific files.

    Duplicate Detection

Detects identical files stored multiple times (same content hash, different locations) so you can eliminate redundant copies.

    Nightly Automated Scanner

A scheduled task runs every night to keep the analysis fresh — no need to manually trigger scans on active sites.

    Actionable Recommendations

For every high-impact file, the plugin gives a specific recommendation: convert to WebP, transcode to H.264, host on YouTube, delete unused backup, etc.

    How the Impact Score works

    75–100
    Critical

Act immediately — large file, inefficient format, or heavily duplicated.

    50–74
    High

Significant savings available with straightforward conversion.

    25–49
    Medium

Worth addressing during the next content review cycle.

    0–24
    Low

Already well-optimised or too small to matter.
