    Label Diagram

Learn the parts. Prove you know them.

Label Diagram is a Moodle activity for learning labelled diagrams. Students work through one diagram at a time, dragging coloured labels onto numbered points, or tapping a label then a point on a phone or tablet. Each part can open a short “What it does” card. Made for technical and vocational training, including aviation, automotive, engineering, health and science.

    Three modes

    • Study (ungraded): Every part is labelled. Tap one to open its “What it does” card.
    • Practice (ungraded): Instant right/wrong feedback with sounds, hints and Show answers. Cards explain parts as soon as they are placed correctly.
    • Test (graded): No hints. Each slide is submitted and locked; results come at the end. The server marks answers. Optional time and attempt limits.

Teachers select available modes. Each has its own start screen; Test also shows pass mark, attempts, time limit and completion requirements.

    The student experience

    • Drag and drop with mouse, pen or touch: labels tilt, nearest zones snap and highlight, curved lines connect placements, and missed drops spring back.
    • Tap a label then a point, or use Tab, Enter/Space and Esc. A screen-reader live region announces actions; an alternative to dragging supports WCAG 2.2 SC 2.5.7.
    • “What it does” cards support bold, italics and bullets. Browser-generated sounds accompany pickup, drop, feedback, slide completion and passing; learners can mute and teachers can disable them.
    • Results include an animated score ring, Passed/Try again, confetti, answer review and optional leaderboard showing first name and last initial. Full screen includes an iPhone fallback.
    • Up to 10 parts plus 4 distractors per diagram; text and boxes resize automatically. Reduced-motion preferences are respected.

    Getting started

    1. Unzip into mod/labeldiagram (Moodle 5.1+: public/mod/labeldiagram), then visit Site administration → Notifications.
    2. Turn course editing on and select Add an activity or resource → Label diagram.
    3. Open Manage slides; upload multiple images or an image ZIP to create slides in filename order.
    4. In Quick add, enter one Label | What it does per line, press Start placing, then click the image for each label.
    5. Drag or arrow-nudge markers, choose colours and mark distractors; edits autosave.

    Image tips

Recommended 1600 × 1200 pixels; PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP and SVG. Use a clean, label-free image with a plain background and room around parts. Upload up to 100 images or a ZIP up to 200 MB; files that are not real images are skipped.

    Optional AI helpers

Copyable prompts for an AI tool of your choice are provided in the upload and label editor: Make the perfect image with AI cleans a photo, drawing or PDF page; Copy ChatGPT prompt generates parts and explanations in Quick add format. You copy and paste the prompts yourself; these helpers do not send your diagram to an AI service automatically. Commercial access checks are separate from these authoring helpers.

    Settings, grades and completion

Per activity: choose Study, Practice and/or Test, attempts allowed, time limit (server-enforced with a 30-second grace period), shuffled labels, when explanation cards appear, sounds and leaderboard. Site administration → Plugins → Activity modules → Label diagram sets defaults for Sounds and Leaderboard in new activities.

Test scores go to the Moodle gradebook; grading can use the highest, average, first or last attempt. Grade to pass appears on Test start and results screens. Completion can require a view, a grade, a passing grade or Finish all slides.

    Reports

Open Reports from the activity menu. Test part difficulty shows percentage of responses wrong, percentage of students wrong, blanks and the most-confused label. Practice shows average and maximum tries and percentage correct first time.

Attempts can be filtered by mode and group, deleted (updating grades and completion), recalculated, or downloaded as CSV, Excel or ODS. Reports follow Moodle’s Show user identity setting and separate groups.

    Security and privacy

In Test the browser never receives the answer key: attempts use random tokens and the server marks placements. Slides cannot be submitted twice and late submissions are rejected. Web services check context and capabilities.

Stored per student: attempts (mode, state, times and score) and individual placements, correctness and tries. Test grades are stored in the gradebook. Mute preferences stay in the student's browser. Moodle’s Privacy API supports export and deletion. Optional leaderboard names are limited to first name and last initial and respect separate groups.

    Backup, copy and Sharing Cart

Full Moodle backup and restore supports Duplicate, Import, Course copy, Sharing Cart and recycle bin. Images, labels, colours and explanation text are copied; student attempts are included only when user data is selected.
